Gabe leaves me to my thoughts well after we get home. I’m grateful I still have a couple of hours before it’s time to meet up with Kortney. My body feels sick. I’m not taking this new knowledge well. I spy the guide sticking partially out of my bag. I ignore the spinning room and make a go for it. Unfortunately my head doesn’t seem to agree and I hit the floor with a hard, audible thud.

Gabe rushes in before I have a chance to move. “Babe, are you alright?”

“Yeah, apparently my coordination is worse than usual. I was just trying to get the guide from my bag.”

Gabe picks me up as though I weigh nothing and carefully places me back on our bed. He hands me the guide and takes a long look at me. “Maybe you should call Kortney and reschedule. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you don’t look so good. Are you feeling okay?”

If it weren’t me to instigate the no more secrets policy, I wouldn’t tell him the truth. “Not really, no. Maybe I caught a bug or something, but I can’t reschedule with Kortney. We have too much to go over.”

Gabe runs a hand through his hair—his tell when he’s frustrated. “Can she come here? Or could you guys do it over the phone or computer or something? You look like you need some rest.”

Damn. The concern is plain on Gabe’s face. I relent because I can’t take the look in his eyes. “Fine! Grab my phone and I’ll call her instead.”

Gabe’s back with my phone quickly. He places it on the nightstand and lays a gentle hand across my head. “I’m going to make you some soup.”

“I’ll be here, babe.” I assure him. He’s cute when he’s all mother-henish.

“Call me if you need me.” He says as he goes into the hall.

First thing’s first. I grab my guide and remove the spell Elias placed on it when he ‘charged’ it for me. He’s been after his own agenda from the first day. All of them have and it makes me wonder how far the corruption goes.

Removing the spell takes even more energy than I thought it would. The guide is still only a few pages long and nothing new pops up when I’ m done. I have to remember to ask my mom if this guide is legitimate, next time I see her. I open the drawer on my nightstand and place the guide inside. I’m not going to mess with it until I know if the information in it is tainted or not.

My phone goes off and Shay’s face pops onto the screen. For just a split second, I reach for it in my excitement to talk to him. Then reality sets in. Once the phone’s in my hand my finger presses the red button. Not yet—certainly not now. It’s too soon for all of that and Gabe’s right. I feel like shit.

I dial Kortney and explain that I’m sick. She tells me not to worry, everything’s under control and will keep until tomorrow.
